Fatality in early morning fire

Crews responded to Shallows Beach Avenue shortly after 7:30 a.m. today

2:45 p.m. update from the the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department:

At approximately 7:37 a.m. this morning, the Sault Ste. Marie Fire and Police Departments responded to a structure fire at 3607 Shallows Beach Ave. within the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

The fire has been extinguished and there is no threat to public safety.

The fire was fatal and is currently under investigation. Victim and fire information is not being released at this time and may be provided in future information releases.

The Sault Ste. Mare Fire and Police Departments are being assisted by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and Victims Services Unit, Michigan State Police and Fire Investigation Unit, and Chippewa County Central Dispatch.

Original 10 a.m. story:

An early morning fire destroyed a house in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Details are very limited at this time, however, the call came in just after 7:30 a.m. with flames and smoke visible at the Shallows Beach Avenue house.

It's unknown if there were any injuries at this time.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department's Victim Services Unit was called in to assist at the scene.
