UNITED STATES SENATOR GARY PETERS

The U.S. Senate passed Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and John Kennedy’s (R-LA) bipartisan resolution that declares September 11th through September 17th Patriot Week. Patriot Week, which was cofounded by Oakland County Judge Michael Warren and his daughter, was created to remember the lives lost on the September 11th terrorist attacks, honor Constitution Day on the 17th, and encourage students to engage with American history and civics.

“More than 21 years since the horrific September 11th terrorist attacks on our nation, we must never forget how Americans rallied together to unite in the face of such tragedy,” said Senator Peters, Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “Patriot Week provides folks with an opportunity to honor those we lost on September 11th, reflect on our nation’s history, engage in civics, and embrace the values and ideals that define who we are as a nation. I was proud to again work with Senator Kennedy to lead this bipartisan, annual recognition in the Senate, and am thankful to Judge Warren and his daughter for their efforts to help spearhead this movement.”

“Patriot Week celebrates what the American spirit is all about and encourages us to reflect on the people who shaped our nation. We will always remember the victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and the many sacrifices first responders made that day. Patriot Week helps tell America’s story—a story that we can’t afford to forget,” said Senator Kennedy.

“Patriot Week and this resolution are so important because in remembering those who perished on September 11 and celebrating our founding principles, we can come together as Americans united for a purpose bigger than ourselves,” said Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack. “Thanks to the inspiration of Mike and Leah, we can put aside our differences and focus on making a difference in people’s lives.”
