After 31 years of service, Detective First Lieutenant Mark Harris will be retiring from the Michigan State Police (MSP) effective June 1, 2024.

GAYLORD — After 31 years of service, Detective First Lieutenant Mark Harris will be retiring from the Michigan State Police (MSP) effective June 1, 2024.

D/F/Lieutenant Harris is a native of Boyne City. He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Western Michigan University. D/F/Lieutenant Harris began his career with the MSP on June 6, 1993, as a member of the 108th Trooper Recruit School. His first post assignment was at the Flint Post as a trooper. From there he went to Kalkaska Post and the Gaylord CIU (fugitive team) as a detective trooper, he was promoted to sergeant then detective sergeant at the Traverse City Post. He served as a detective sergeant Kalkaska and Gaylord Posts until he was promoted to First Lieutenant as the Gaylord Post Commander in 2016. In 2019, he was assigned as the Seventh District Special Investigations Section Commander as a detective first lieutenant overseeing the detectives, fugitive team, and hometown security team personnel assigned to district headquarters.

D/F/Lieutenant Harris has received two Meritorious Service Awards, two Professional Excellence Award, and two Unit Citation Awards for homicide investigations he’s investigated during his career.

D/F/Lieutenant Harris plans to enjoy retirement with his family and church members.
