City establishes budgets for upcoming MDOT projects

City establishes budget covering $878,200 of MDOT's $7.8 Water and Drainage Project; and $60K to revamp crosswalks/sidewalks, while MDOT repaves Ashmun Street/I-75 Business Spur

Sault Ste. Marie City Commission paved the way toward future road and infrastructure projects.

At a regular commission meeting on Monday, a budget was approved to work with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on its Water and Drainage Project along M-129.

A separate motion was approved to establish a budget for the city’s portion of MDOT’s plan to repave Ashmun Street/I-75 Business Spur.

Commissioners authorized City Manager Brian Chapman to sign the MDOT contract for city utility work along M-129 as it pertains to the Water and Drainage Project.

MDOT has asked for a deposit of $131,700. The remainder will be billed upon project completion.

A project budget was approved for $878,200, to be pulled from Water Capital Reserves and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

According to city documentation, MDOT will rehabilitate M-129 from 10 Mile Road to 18th Avenue to shape M-129 from 10 Mile north to West 20th Avenue and reconstruct M-129 from West 18th Avenue to West 20th Avenue.

Meanwhile, MDOT will install a new water main along the west side of M-129 to enhance water flow around Three Mile Road, M-129 and I-75 Business Spur:

“Water main replacement will occur from three Mile Road to 18th Avenue including gate valve and box installation, polyethylene encasement, fire hydrant, slope restoration, replacement and installation of new water services, additional hot mix asphalt application, and laying of sub-base aggregate within driveway approaches and main line water crossings from Three Mile Road to West 20th Avenue that is outside the original MDOT project scope. By taking advantage of this larger project, we are also able to take advantage of material cost savings.”

The total estimated cost for the state project is around $7.8 million.

MDOT will be repaving a portion of Ashmun Street from the canal to Portage Avenue in 2023. As part of its project, the city will address safety issues by revamping crosswalks and sidewalks.

The city commission approved a detour route back in September for the project. MDOT will charge the city a minimum of $42,300 to complete it.

A motion was passed to create an Ashmun Street/I-75 Business Spur MDOT construction budget. The repavement project will extend from the power canal to Portage Avenue.
