The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department is looking for a new chief following the unexpected resignation of Scott LaBonte earlier this month.

“Scott resigned from his post,” City Manager Brian Chapman said of the former fire chief. “He gave his two weeks notice and has moved on.”

The city commission selected Captain Kevin Mohar to act as interim fire chief on Feb. 7. He will carry this title until a replacement is hired.

Mohar has served the city as a firefighter and paramedic since Aug. 18, 1998. He was eventually promoted to lieutenant and later named fire captain.

“Mohar has an outstanding record and was the right person to help move the department forward in the right direction at this time,” said Chapman. “My selection was based on interactions with him as the president of the labor union and captain of the fire department.”

The search is on to find someone eager to take over all fire department and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) related operations. The responsibilities of fire chief include planning, organizing and managing the department and its 19 staff members, who work around the clock to prevent and extinguish fires.

“We are looking for someone with a drive to better the community we all serve, who wants to live here and lead the department forward, ” said Chapman.

The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 25. A hiring decision and final announcement is expected to come near the end of March.

City job opportunities as a firefighter and paramedic, police officer and engineering intern are also available.
