Brimley Baptist Church Pastor Billy Martini set-up a booth at Sault Area High School this afternoon, where Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) held its 15th running Family Fun Fair which attracted 786 participants.
He said to the hundreds of young attendees and their parents/caregivers, "Sin is defined as anything that displeases God.”
The pastor confessed to stealing something small in his younger days. A few little mouths hit the floor, shocked by the confession.
“When I chose to do wrong, I no longer looked like Jesus,” he explained. “Every person has sin in their hearts. That's a bad thing because it keeps us from being closer to Jesus.”
Approaching Easter on Sunday, April 9, he followed by reassuring his audience that Christ died for the sins of His people.
Like Martini, sharing the word and love of God is something local CEF Director Daniel Hamel set out to 17 years ago when he held the very first Family Fun Fair event.
“It gives our families something fun to do, and teaches them the Gospel,” Hamel said. “God loves them.
It was an afternoon filled with games, face painting, snacks, and prizes. Bicycles, basketballs, and candy were among items given away during raflle drawings. More so, it was a day for families to celebrate and learn about Christ.
CEF's mission is to evangelize children so that they may grow in faith.
Volunteering at a nearby booth, stood volunteer Isaac James, sharing The Gideons International New Testament, Psalms & Proverbs.
“We have a big problem in this world,” said James. “It is called, sin.”
Former North Central CEF Director Cheryl Doan talked to children about the sins of the world, identifying Christ as the ultimate rescuer.
“God speaks through creation,” she said. “So, He sent his son.”
Volunteer Becky Proulx helped out at the picture booth, where families received portraits to help remember this day forever.
“I love assisting CEF, and spreading God's word to His children,” she said.
Her own kids were floating around the gym, enjoying games and activities. Her eldest decided to volunteered, herself.
Michelle Sweeten attends Rudyard Bible Church. Her children were also present with one assisting other CEF volunteers.
“This event shows families that they are loved,” Sweeten said. “It is great for my older daughter. She isn't too into sports. Church and events like this give her a place to belong.”
Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Sault Area Public Schools Student Resource Officer Trevor Adkins attended with his wife and kids. They are members of E-Free Church, Sault.
“My wife and I are on the CEF board,” Adkins said. “I help out every year. It's a great community event to give individuals a chance to get out and learn about local churches. There are a lot of volunteers from various parts of the community.”
The CEF Family Fun Fair has been going on for 17 years, two events were canceled due to COVID safety precautions and state mandates. Last year brought in 485 kids and 375 adults.
