St. Marys River is closed to downbound traffic after a cargo vessel ran aground at around 5 p.m. Sunday.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USGC) says the 497-foot freighter – which was carrying canola seed – experienced a mechanical failure.

There are no reports of injuries or pollution from the incident.

“After it regained power, the vessel floated free from the mud bottom and shifted to anchorage in Mud Lake with a tug escort,” said the coast guard in a news release.

USCG is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reopen the channel to downbound traffic.

The upbound traffic channel remains open.
