The score was 14-14 heading into overtime, firing the Blue Devils up for one last battle against Benzie Central at the Sault high's senior night game on Friday night.
Neon glow-in-the-dark accessories illuminated the student section, while two young water-boys said a prayer.
Blue and white stepped back out on to the muddy field with pride to claim a 20-14 win over Benzie, ending the regular season witb a record of 6-3.
Classmates held their handmade signs up to the lights that shined on their victors, especially Ryver Ryckeghem, who scored the final touchdown. The mascot did cartwheels and danced for cheering fans.
To kick-off the evening, family escorted seniors to the sidelines to be celebrated and recognized by fans, teammates, and coaches.
Kylie Brown is a member of this year’s pom squad, recognized for her hard work and participation.
“I have been involved in dance my whole life,” said Brown, favoring jazz and lyrical over other styles.
But Brown has other goals in mind after graduation. She plans on attending Lake Superior State University (LSSU) to study nursing, possibly sticking around the area after that.
Sault high band member Olivia Martin plays the oboe, French horn, mellophone, and snare drums.
“I'm planning on majoring in music education and music performance, and minoring in chemistry,” said Martin.
Like Brown, Ava Donmyer has been dancing her entire life as well. It only made sense that she would sign up for pom poms this year.
“Why not try something new?” Donmyer said.
Donmyer hopes to inspire others to do the same now and in the future.
