The coldest air of the winter season will blast into the region Sunday and stick around for a few days.

Despite some warmer weather the next couple of days with highs in the lower to middle 30s, the coldest air of this winter season is predicted to hit the Eastern U.P. starting late Saturday evening and night and last through at least Wednesday morning.

Several National Weather Service computer models predict high temperatures struggling to get into the single digits for daytime high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday.

Overnight low temperatures are expected to drop well below zero. In fact, if skies clear out at night, especially east of I-75 near and along the St. Marys River, the mercury could drop to -15 to -25 F.

With these kind of temperatures, any kind of wind will add to the misery of the cold for the children walking to school or waiting for the bus at daybreak, with dangerous wind chills from -10 to -20 F during the daylight hours and -25 to -35 F at night.

According to The Cleveland Clinic, you can get frostbite in 30 minutes or less when the wind chill is -15 F.

Any lake effect snow showers will consist of very small, dry flakes with the air mass so cold, thus, accumulations will be held in check.

Temperatures are expected to moderate Wednesday afternoon with highs in the upper teens to lower 20s.
