13th annual Veteran’s Day Ride/Riddle run happens this weekend

Proceeds from the event benefit local veterans

The 13th Annual Veteran’s Day Ride/Riddle run is this Saturday and is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

It will start and end at the Brimley VFW Post 9023 at 8968 M-28.

This year's format is going to be a bit different. Upon registration, participants will receive a list of four stops with GPS coordinates, directions, and a riddle for the four stops. The goal is to answer the riddle at each stop and take a picture of the object that answers the riddle. Upon return to the VFW hall, if the participants will show pictures of all four answers to be entered into a special drawing for a grand prize.

Co-organizer Patrick Romeri started the event over a decade ago and it continues to grow.

"This event started out in my garage in 2012. I just wanted to put something fun together no matter the weather as our veterans endured far worse conditions for the land we get to play on. Now it’s turned into a big fundraiser for our local VFW which not only gives to our local vets but is continuing support of various things in our community. Three years ago it grew so big it simply outgrew my garage so two years ago we moved it to the Brimley VFW hall," he said.

All money goes towards local veterans.

"The last two years we have raised a total of $20,000 with approximately 300 people participating each year. Roughly 80-90 side-by-sides are expected to participate again this year. As a veteran and a son of a veteran, I’m honored to organize this event every year as it is a great opportunity to bring people into our community to support a great cause," he added.

The ride will start and finish at the Brimley VFW beginning at 9 a.m. Participants will go with their own group, at their own pace, and leave when they want. They just have to be back to the VFW by 5 p.m. if they want to enter into the grand prize drawing.

The VFW ladies' auxiliary will be cooking another outstanding meal. Project 906 will be performing following dinner.

A $20 minimum donation gets you dinner, entered in the prize draw, riddle run and live entertainment. Every additional $5 that is donated gets you another ticket for a shot at the prizes.

A 50/50 raffle will also take place throughout the day. $1 per ticket, $5 for 6 tickets.

Dinner will consist of ham, scallop potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, bread and butter.

Timeline of events:

  • 5 p.m. - Return to the hall to enter the grand prize draw and social hour.
