Community seniors danced and dined Thanksgiving away at Avery Square yesterday evening after two years of adhering to COVID precautions.
"It's good to have this back," Chippewa–Luce–Mackinaw County Community Action Agency (CLMCCAA) Executive Director Joe Nolan said about hosting a get-together to remember. "We have a really good turn out. We're happy to be able to do this for our seniors."
The staff of CLMCCAA decorated the dining hall with festive crafts and table settings. Snacks included crackers and cheese varieties. Trays of hot roast turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and stuffing were passed out. Many enjoyed a slice of pumpkin pie. Avery Square resident Len Bertram had two.
"I am happy to be here because it's Thanksgiving and I am thankful," he said with a smile. "I have friends here."
Seniors from the all over the community came out to join in on the holiday fun to be had. Some sang, others danced, but laughs were shared throughout the dining hall.
CLMCCAA will do it all over again for Christmas.
"We hope residents come back in December," Nolan said, already planning the Christmas dinner. "We will have trees lit up in the atrium."
Area seniors are more than welcome to participate in Avery Square events.
