Willy's Dunn Right Food Truck and Catering is relatively new to the area, but the faces behind it are not.
Billy Cryderman is the race director at the I-500 Snowmobile Endurance Race, works at the Chippewa Co. Road Commission and sometimes works the grill. However, his sister, Tracey Dunn and her husband, Jimmy, came up with the idea.
"They thought up the idea, so my wife Jen, and I, partnered with them. They decided they wanted to venture into this. My sister is a 35+ year chef, with the last 18 years at Karl's Cuisine. She decided to do something in the summertime to add to the catering she was already doing. This is Tracey's full-time job at Willy's Dunn Right. Me, Jen and Jimmy have other jobs but fill in to help her," Cryderman said.
The idea came up in Nov. 2023 to start the business. It came to fruition six months later on May 15 and business has been very good.
"The food truck, for the customer, is all about the variety. In town here, we have a taco truck among others. We are a little higher end on the food truck end. We specialize in high-end hamburgers. It's been good. We didn't realize that when we started this, the need and demand for this area. This was going to be a second income for our catering business, but this has taken over as a full-time job," Cryderman said.
Willy's Dunn Right goes further than just serving tasty food. They focus on using, and selling, products made in Michigan.
"My sister is adamant about buying what we can from Michigan. If you want a soda, we sell Faygo. We get our bread from the Detroit Bread Company. We sell kettle chips made in Traverse City. We have Dearborn sausage and Koegel hot dogs. It is very dear to my sister's heart," Cryderman explained.
Keeping the business within the family is important.
"For us, it's our family that makes it work. The five people that really work this food truck, we are all family," Cryderman concluded.
