PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY, Mich. - On Feb. 18, a 68-year-old Rogers City man received a fraudulent letter that appeared to be from Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union. The letter displayed the bank’s letterhead and indicated the victim’s bank account was hacked.
The victim subsequently contacted the telephone number listed on the fraudulent letter and was put in contact with multiple individuals who were not associated with the Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union. The suspect allegedly drove to the victim’s residence for an in-person exchange of an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspect also convinced the victim to drive to Gaylord and deposit more money into a Cash2Bitcoin ATM. This type of scam has occurred throughout the State of Michigan. The suspect was described as an African American male, possibly 20 to 30 years old, tall/skinny build, short black hair, and was wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants, and an earring.
The suspect vehicle is a newer style black Dodge Challenger with tinted windows and a license plate on the front and rear of the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the MSP Alpena Post at (989) 354-4101.
