Petoskey builder charged with contractor fraud

Michigan State Police were investigating a builder’s fraud complaint when another victim was identified

A trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post was investigating a builder’s fraud complaint in July 2024 when another victim was identified. The victim paid the contractor, 33-year-old Carter Chou Bassett from Petoskey, $76,000 to remodel their home. Bassett never obtained permits or began work on the home. A report was turned over to the Presque Isle Prosecutor’s Office and an arrest warrant was issued on September 6, 2024. Bassett was arrested and lodged in the Presque Isle County Jail on September 9, 2024.

Bassett was arraigned in the 89th District Court in Presque Isle County on one count Contractor Fraudulant Use of Building Funds. He was given a $5,000 PR bond. His next court appearance is on October 22, 2024.
