After the Soo Locks Visitors Center officially closed Thursday evening, it opened back up for board members of the Soo Locks Visitors Association (SLVCA) as well paid members of the SLVCA and other dignitaries, to honor Ed Reining for his two decades of volunteer service at the Visitors Center inside the Soo Locks Canal Park.
The Enduring Service Volunteer Award was established in January 2016 by the Corps Foundation.
The award is intended as a lifetime achievement award for exceptional volunteers who have made a positive difference in the lakes and waterways and the communities they serve by volunteering for a period of six years or more.
Recognizing the excellence of these individuals and families, the award highlights the long-term dedication and devotion of those who support Corps lakes and waterways.
Reining was selected among eight people, from across the nation, who were nominated for their continued service and accomplishments.
"I was surprised. And I said, why me? Please take this properly. I am glad to receive it alive and not dead. You see that so many times where they get their awards afterwards. But this has been a total joy working here otherwise I wouldn't be here," Reining chuckled.
Reining also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for his years of volunteer service.
