Douglas Mark Lehigh, age 67, died on July 8, 2024, at MyMichigan Medical Center-Sault. He was born on October 27, 1956, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Arthur and Gertrude (Cryderman) Lehigh.

Doug remained a lifelong resident of the area, deeply embedded in the community he loved. He graduated from Pickford High School and shortly thereafter, served honorably in the United States Navy aboard the USS Enterprise.  His four years of service were marked by a commitment to excellence and camaraderie with his fellow sailors. Following his military service, Doug returned to Sault Ste. Marie and attended Lake Superior State University.  He began his career as a machinist at Wohlert Special Products which manufactured flywheels for GM and John Deere.  He worked his way up to manager of the shop and worked there until they closed.  He currently was employed at R&B Electronics.  He had many friends at R&B and was a respected figure at work, where he was known for his skills, reliability and keen sense of responsibility.

A man of faith, Doug was a long-time member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Barbeau, Michigan.

Doug’s personal life was enriched by his hobbies, which included gardening, hunting, kayaking and fishing.  These activities not only brought him immense joy, but also allowed him to connect with nature and share his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Doug was an avid outdoorsman, when not at work he could be found outside.  He was a great mechanic and loved to fix things and never liked to give up on any equipment or vehicle.

Doug was a great brother, and friend, always ready to lend a hand or an ear.  Known for his resilience and positive outlook, he was a pillar of strength to all who knew him.  Doug never gave up on anyone and was always there for them.  He would come to his friend or family’s aid when they needed him without fail.  Doug also never let bad times or bad feelings interfere with these relationships.  He always forgave and moved on, like water off a duck’s back.  He would be hurt, but he never turned away from the people God put in his life.  Some of his dear life friends that are here now and have gone before him are Lester Patrick, Peter Young, Chris Leppala, Mark Horka, Rick and Buddy.

Doug is survived by his siblings, Daniel (Janet) Lehigh, Pam (Peter) Young, Marcia (John) Mason, and David (Diana) Lehigh; along with several nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Arthur; and his brother-in-law, James Kibble.

Doug’s life will be celebrated and remembered for the profound impact he had on those around him.  His legacy of kindness, dedication, and community spirit will continue to inspire. A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024, from 12:00 Noon to 1:30PM at Holy Family Church, 4585 E. 15 Mile Rd, Barbeau, Michigan.  A Mass Service starts at 1:30PM, followed immediately by a burial service at Holy Family Cemetery on M129. The Holy Family Cemetery is on the corner of M129 and 15 Mile Road, about 5 miles from the church.

In lieu of flowers, please consider taking a step outdoors and having gratitude for the beautiful area we live in and enjoy it as Doug did.
