Fans of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge west of the Sault are being advised of upcoming roadwork that may impact access as the season comes to a close.

The Marshland Wildlife Drive is open until October 6, 2024, staff at the refuge say, but visitors are asked to drive slowly on the Refuge Entrance Road. Work on the road is expected to begin Monday including laying of asphalt. The Fishing Loop is closed as of October 1.

"Please drive slowly on the Refuge Entrance Road. It is currently gravel and a bit rough," the refuge says in a news release.

"More work on the Refuge Entrance Road is needed, including laying asphalt. This next phase of work is planned to begin on Oct. 7, and may last until the drive closes on Oct. 20.

"When the Entrance Road is closed there will be no access to the Marshland Wildlife Drive.

"We realize this is an unfortunate and inconvenient way to end the season; we are having to adapt to changing construction needs.

"Walking, bicycling, paddling and hunting opportunities are still available."

The refuge said the situation may change and encouraged the public to check the website or Facebook for updates.
