The Great Education Initiative (GEI) has warned Michigan superintendents and school boards regarding the legal risks of upholding the Biden Administration's redefinition of Title IX. This follows a Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling blocking the Administration’s guidance that expands Title IX to include protections based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

GEI's letter emphasizes the legal liabilities school districts face if they disregard recent court rulings, particularly the injunction upheld by the Sixth Circuit. While many states have received federal injunctions preventing enforcement of this redefinition, Michigan has not.

“The Biden Administration's redefinition of Title IX imposes dangerous policies that disregard parental rights, religious freedoms, and the safety of students. Michigan cannot wait for federal action—we must act now to protect our students, families, and schools," stated Monica Yatooma, GEI Director.

The redefinition compels schools to adopt policies conflicting with Michigan’s existing legal framework, which maintains sex-based distinctions in areas like bathrooms and athletics.

In response, GEI is preparing a federal case seeking an injunction specific to Michigan. The lawsuit will challenge the Biden Administration’s overreach and seek to protect Michigan’s students and parents.

Yatooma added, "Our upcoming federal case aims to ensure that Michigan families are no longer left vulnerable to these extreme policies.”

GEI is calling on Michigan families to join the organization to ensure their schools are included in this effort. Membership will allow parents and community members to be part of the injunction, to preserve traditional values in education, and to protect children’s safety.

“We urge families across the state to stand with us,” Yatooma said. “Together, we can safeguard our children’s futures and push back against dangerous policies that put them at risk.”
