Nestled inside the heart of the Avery Square in downtown Sault Ste. Marie is the Avery Center Cafe.
"This place just gave me the opportunity to do something I wanted to do. I knew I could bring people in here and treat them to homemade meals while keeping prices low. While it gives options to the residents of Avery Square, the cafe is welcoming in the general public more and more," said co-owner, Richard Michalski.
Michalski is excited to provide tasty options at affordable prices.
"My top three items include any of my authentic Mexican dishes I have on Thursdays. I also have my homemade soups, biscuits and gravy and cinnamon rolls. My prices are very reasonable. My lunches are in the $5-$8 range for good portions. Plus, if you make it from scratch, it will taste better," Michalski explained.
While there are specials every day they are open, there are several items that are always on the menu.
"I try to do theme days but every day we have ham sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, club sandwiches along with chicken, tuna and egg salad sandwiches. We also have regular salads along with soup. Heading into the colder months, we will be serving hot turkey and hot roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy. And of course, what are winter months without grilled cheese and tomato soup," Michalski said.
Michalski volunteered at the Meals on Wheels program for several months prior to this new endeavour. He still volunteers his time cooking hearty breakfasts on Sunday mornings at the VFW.
"It's cozy and quiet. You get your flavorful food fast," Michalski added.
Michalski co-owns Avery Center Cafe with Amy Sprague.
