From Sault Polyclinic to The Annex Apts...a rich history.

Presbyterian missionaries first erected a church on that property around 1850 before moving the congregation to a new location around 1900

This building, formerly known as the Sault Polyclinic and the Chippewa County Courthouse Annex, now houses 11 beautiful new apartments and is known as The Annex Apartments.

The Annex is located at 300 Court Street across from the Chippewa County Courthouse. With income limits between 60 per cent and 120 per cent of the area median income, The Annex, a three-storey building with an elevator, is providing housing to eligible applicants for one and two-bedroom units.

Before The Annex Apartmentts become an idea and then a reality, the building had a rich history.

According to the Chippewa County Historical Society, the property was first used by Presbyterian missionaries who erected a church there about 1850. The lot was vacant from the time the church building was removed to the construction of the clinic. David E. Anderson was the architect.

A couple of news articles say the Sault Polyclinic was built in 1937 by A.H Proksch Co. of Iron River with a $30,000 bid.

The clinic was made of brick and tile, with light bluff and ivory coloring. It was finished in a light tan brick, with decorations and panels of light cast stone. The interior molding was reminiscent of Greek architecture.

Doctors originally in the building included Dr. Stanley Vegors, (eye, ear, nose, throat), Dr. F.C. Bandy (x-ray), Dr. James G. Blaine   (surgery), Dr. E.H. Webster (heart and electrocardiology), Dr. E. O. Gillfillan (internal medicine),  Dr. W. G. Birch  (obstetrics and gynecology).

A new addition housing a complete laboratory with lab technician, Ms. Mary Titus, at the helm was also constructed sometime later.

The county purchased the building in 1992 for a little more than $500,000. In 2000 a $1.7 million renovation was completed on it.

The Annex is an apartment community managed by KMG Prestige.
