From business flights to long-awaited vacations, Chippewa County International Airport (CIU) has been serving the eastern upper Michigan area since 1978. Previously an air command base that served the military, the airport is constantly making changes to enhance the safety and satisfaction of the travel experience.

"When we first started out, we had 19 passenger turboprop aircrafts. Now we are up to 50 passenger jets," said Tami Beseau, the airport manager who has worked at CIU for 33 years.

As the aircraft have gotten larger in the past forty years, so has the commercial terminal, which has expanded from 2,500 square feet to 22,000. The new state-of-the-art terminal facility provides an open concept floor plan, is well lit, includes updated x-ray and baggage handling equipment, and has an excellent air handling system, which provides fresh air throughout the terminal for airline passengers.

CIU also offers free parking for airline customers. Airline passengers can park their automobile free of charge whether they leave for a long weekend or a few weeks.

Delta Connection offers daily round trips to Detroit (DTW) and Minneapolis (MSP). In less than one-hour, airline passengers can be on their way to their dream vacation.

"CIU passengers have the ability to book their flights through two major hub airports, which is a great accomplishment for an airport our size, and it gives CIU passengers the ability to compare ticket prices and flight times," stated Beseau.
