The 2022 Soo Film Festival was awarded a grant totalling $2,500 from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and administered by Eastern Upper Peninsula Planning Commission.

The grant was awarded through the MACC peer review process and was one of 559 applications to compete for fiscal year 2022 funding.

“On behalf of the Michigan Arts & Cultural Council, it is a pleasure that Eastern U.P. Regional Planning & Development Commission is able to support events such as Soo Film Festival through the Project Support mini-grant,” Ellen J. Benoit, Finance & Programs Manager, Eastern U.P. Regional Planning & Development Commission.

“We are grateful for the extra resources to make our festival even better and to support the motion picture arts in Michigan. We are also thankful for the efforts of Knepper Development Strategies to help get us this grant,” Jason Markstrom, Soo Film Festival president.

Organizations receiving a MACC grant award are required to match those funds with other public and private dollars. Local support of Soo Film Festival includes the Sault Ste. Marie Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Roberts P. and Ella B. Hudson Foundation.

The MACC peer review process allows for each grant application to be competitively considered by a panel of in-state and out-of-state arts and culture professionals.

This ensures the taxpayers, who support this project through legislative appropriations, and all other visitors or residents in Michigan will have access to the highest quality arts and cultural experiences.

A complete list of grant awards around the state is available by contacting MACC at (517) 241-4011, or by visiting the MACC website at michigan.gov/arts.
