7 Bridges 7 Brews 5k/10k event Saturday

Proceeds benefit OUT House Consortium, a non-profit organization, to develop, maintain and promote the non-motorized trail systems in the Sault Ste. Marie area

Experience historic Sault Ste. Marie in a different way Saturday evening, July 20, by participating in the 7 Bridges 7 Brews 5k or 10k event.

The route spans all seven bridges that connect the downtown island area.

After the run, or walk, if you prefer, enjoy some brews at Bird's Eye Outfitters at the official island-themed, post-race party including live entertainment and a costume contest. Big Buck Brewery will be in town as the brew sponsor to add to your enjoyment with its tantalizing selection of seven brews.

Proceeds benefit OUT House Consortium, a non-profit organization, to develop, maintain and promote the non-motorized trail systems in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

A donation button is available for anyone who is or is not partaking in the run or walk but still wants to support the improvement of our recreation trails.

Ken and Wilda Hopper, owners of Bird's Eye Outfitters, are also involved in the OUT House Consortium.

"In 2018 our group identified that not only were we going to increase the infrastructure for non-motorized transportation and recreation, but also provide maintenance services and promotion to neglected and potential areas of the silent sports. On top of that, we were going to provide programming and events to the community to celebrate the uniqueness of our area," Ken said.

"One of the most unique facets of our area is the creation of a man-made canal that runs through the city to create hydroelectric power. This canal actually makes an island out of the downtown area," he added. "We played off of this to create a one-of-a-kind fundraiser in the 7 Bridges 7 Brews 5K/10K that celebrates this uniqueness.

"It is a nighttime run that traverses all seven bridges that cross the canal to connect the mainland to the island. The race ends at Bird's Eye Outfitters for an island-themed party to celebrate the efforts of the participants, coconut bras, grass skirts, tiki bar and all.

"The supporting brewery offers shared giveaway and auction items and an offering of seven styles of beer from their brewery in coordination with the seven bridges," he said.

Race sign-up is until 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The race starts at 7 p.m. The after-party is open to all who want to attend, not just racers.

"All are welcome to attend the after-party to celebrate the participants and the event and the area at Bird's Eye Outfitters. There will be giveaways, a silent auction of some great deals including a signed Detroit Tigers Jersey and bat, food and fun. Thanks to Atwater Brewery for being great to work with through Marchetti Distributing," Ken said.
