Ashmun Street was lined with patriotically dressed spectators revved up to celebrate July 4th in the Sault.
The Sault Ste. Marie City Independence Day Parade lasted just over an hour yesterday, beginning at Davitt Street around 7 p.m., prior to heading north on Ashmun Street, turning left on Portage Avenue, and continuing west to Magazine Street.
The city designated a quiet zone along the Ashmun Business Spur at the start of the parade to accommodate anyone unable to tolerate lights, music, loud horns and sirens.
Participating agencies, businesses, school groups, politicians, non-profit organizations, and other floats hit the downtown district ready to party with bubbles, candy, lights, music, dancing, and sirens.
The community cheered, kids raced to the streets for candy, couples warmly embraced, and families took pictures to remember this year's 4th of July celebration.
Three Sault residents judged this year's floats. Lake Superior State University (LSSU) won $200 for the best float; Sault High Poms won $200 for the best walking group; Sault High Poms won $200; and STILL won $200 for the best overall group.
According to Library of Congress, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, separating the colonies from Great Britain to build an independent legal and governmental foundation.
